Wandi Riyadi: Smooth Fish with Boxwood (4510) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-922-0003

The only pipe maker I know of from Indonesia, Wandi Riyadi was born in Tasikmalaya, West Java in 1984 and was inspired to begin crafting pipes after he saw people smoking them while as a youth. In 2011, he began smoking himself, and his drive to carve was enhanced as he learned of the creative freedom and artistic nature of handmade pipes, leading him to start his career as an artisan. Being one of Indonesia's few artisan carvers, Riyadi turned to the internet to educate himself on carving, and his shaping style is influenced by historic masters of the craft, such as Bo Nordh, Sixten Ivarsson, and Hiroyuki Tokutomi. Regardless of the influence he takes from other artisans, Riyadi boasts a design language all his own, and this unique perspective offers refreshing takes on nearly every shape he carves.

This is a deceptively simple rendition of the Fish shape, and one which thrives on the impressiveness of its subtlety, the most immediately arresting element of its construction being the deep bend of the shank and stem. Said pairing here lends the outline of this pipe an Oom Paul-like presence which poises the entire thing for prime jaw-hanging and centers the visual weight on the transition thanks to the verticality of the aft section. The shank itself lifts and curls out of a tight transition, flaring out as it reaches toward a plump ring of pale boxwood. The Fish's iconic ridgeline begins at the right flank of the shank here, though it doesn't lend the shank a conventional teardrop shape, opting instead to slightly curl the ridge toward the aft even further. What results is a ridge that's rather understated in its presence but alters the straight lines of the shank slightly, showcasing a hollowed carving through the back of the shank that gradually becomes less pronounced as the ridge flows through to wrap around the fore of the bowl. The ridge here not only sharpens the outline of this pipe from the right side, but firms up the feel in hand, though its extremely low dip down into the heel maintains all of the softness which Riyadi has imbued into the stummel, something especially prevalent at the bowl. Said bowl boasts a low-set waist and a gentle cant forward, its walls curving as they taper upward into a flat rim that's chamfered into the chamber. The bowl's nearly perfect Egg shape makes it not only quite shapely, but quite comfortable to hold as well, and the aforementioned softness it displays is further emphasized by the right side of the transition's subtle cheeking. Dressed in a warm mahogany stain, the grain here is fantastic, with flame grain urging forward toward the bowl across the flanks, while the underside is awash with densely populated birdseye.
