Wandi Riyadi: Smooth Long Shank Blowfish (N) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-922-0005
The only pipe maker I know of from Indonesia, Wandi Riyadi was born in Tasikmalaya, West Java in 1984 and was inspired to begin crafting pipes after he saw people smoking them while as a youth. In 2011, he began smoking himself, and his drive to carve was enhanced as he learned of the creative freedom and artistic nature of handmade pipes, leading him to start his career as an artisan. Being one of Indonesia's few artisan carvers, Riyadi turned to the internet to educate himself on carving, and his shaping style is influenced by historic masters of the craft, such as Bo Nordh, Sixten Ivarsson, and Hiroyuki Tokutomi. Regardless of the influence he takes from other artisans, Riyadi boasts a design language all his own, and this unique perspective offers refreshing takes on nearly every shape he carves.
This long-shanked Blowfish is a deceptive pipe, showcasing a shockingly thick build in profile that boasts a lengthy shank pushing out of a wide transition. This thickness, while certainly present from a side view, immediately disappears if this pipe is seen from the smoker's perspective, as the flanks have been compressed to an incredible degree. Despite its robust build, the shank lifts slightly as it pushes out toward its end, where it meets a uniquely stylized stem that continues the top line of the shank with its tall accent of brindled vulcanite: an especially vibrant iteration of the material that swirls together several hues of light brown. Ebbing out of this accent is a slim, jet-black stem, contrasting the look of its accent well while taking on a comfortable, demure downturn for comfortable smoking. Additionally, the accent here features a more swift upward taper near the inside, while the outside retains its firm, rigid lines without this taper, rising above the shank and curling forward slightly to offer a handsome, singular look. Up front, the bowl showcases the archetypal Blowfish look, with two broad panels across the flanks which display an understated asymmetry, the midsection tapering gently from the left flank into the right. Dressed in a warm, rich stain, the stummel here showcases a truly stunning array of birdseye, the tall shank's entire length acting as a canvas for the swirling grain, with the bowl following suit. A feat of artistic pipe making, this piece has earned Riyadi's superlative "N" stamping, designating only his best work and something which it has certainly earned.-John McElheny
