Wandi Riyadi: Partially Rusticated Bent Apple with Boxwood (6010) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-922-0012

The only pipe maker I know of from Indonesia, Wandi Riyadi was born in Tasikmalaya, West Java in 1984 and was inspired to begin crafting pipes after he saw people smoking them while as a youth. In 2011, he began smoking himself, and his drive to carve was enhanced as he learned of the creative freedom and artistic nature of handmade pipes, leading him to start his career as an artisan. Being one of Indonesia's few artisan carvers, Riyadi turned to the internet to educate himself on carving, and his shaping style is influenced by historic masters of the craft, such as Bo Nordh, Sixten Ivarsson, and Hiroyuki Tokutomi. Regardless of the influence he takes from other artisans, Riyadi boasts a design language all his own, and this unique perspective offers refreshing takes on nearly every shape he carves.

This bent Apple is a delightfully robust shape from Riyadi, with the vast majority of this substance centered around the full-bodied bowl, one that takes advantage of the Apple's ample rounding. Said bowl stands atop a sweeping heel and expands out to a low-set waist before taking on an arcing taper to the softly domed rim, with this bit of domed shaping underscoring the supple contours of the bowl's walls. Comfortable in hand and staying true to the design of its namesake shape, the bowl here is possessed of an impressive breadth, being wider than it is tall and creating thick walls that admirably insulate the chamber. A wide transition leaves plenty of room to drape a thumb before giving way to a lengthy, curling stretch of round shank, one whose upward slope terminates in a trim ring of boxwood at the junction to its demurely curved black vulcanite saddle stem. Offering a comfortable smoking posture, this combination additionally serves to balance the visual presence of the bowl, its slender silhouette drawing some attention away from the more rotund elements at the fore. Dressed in a partial rustication, the entirety of the shank is covered in dark, craggy texture that's been painstakingly carved to resemble the wrapping flame grain and dense birdseye that mark the bowl's surfaces beneath its vibrant stain.
