Wandi Riyadi: Smooth Bent Dublin Sitter with Bamboo Tobacco Pipe

Hailing from Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia, Wandi Riyadi is one of few artisans from the nation, inspired by the artistry of handmade pipes from carvers such as Bo Nordh, Hiroyuki Tokutomi, and Sixten Ivarsson. As such, Riyadi's work boasts an impressively Danish and Japanese-influenced style that values complex, organic detail, sophisticated structure, and rich curves. This bent Dublin Sitter is a hybrid-style shape that fuses elements of its namesake with the Poker, creating a stable and attractive desktop companion that's both practical and stylish, with a capacious chamber that promises leisurely smoking sessions. The transition is wide, and it gives way to an extremely brief shank that lifts and tapers swiftly to meet three knuckles of organic bamboo, extending the reach of the shank significantly. An aluminum tube lines the interior of the bamboo, and a sleek saddle stem of black vulcanite caps its reach out back, its extended aluminum tenon keeping the shank extension strong and rigid. The stem's base is accented with a flaring expansion ring right near the bit, continuing the rhythm of the bamboo aptly and maintaining a natural, organic look that balances the bowl well despite its impressive visual weight. Up front, the bowl stands on a flat, slanted heel that allows for stable sitting on a flat surface, and it rises into thick, flaring walls that expand out toward a ridge just below the rim: this ridge following the asymmetrical look of the rim's plateau and wavering as it surrounds the top of the bowl. From this ridge, the walls taper subtly to meet their plateau crown, creating a subdued look of muscularity, which is tempered by a sweeping shape at the fore wall. Dressed in a warm, rich, mahogany-toned finish, the stummel showcases dense flame grain around the walls, with birdseye present at the heel.
