Wandi Riyadi: Smooth Cauldron Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-922-0029

Indonesian artisan Wandi Riyadi started as an IT engineer before he began crafting pipes in 2011. His work takes inspiration from Japanese and Danish masters, like the Ivarssons, Bo Nordh, and Hiroyuki Tokutomi, and as such, his work is often highly organic, though he does craft more conservative pieces as well. The Cauldron is a rare shape often associated with Italian pipe makers, though carvers and brands from other countries, such as Riyadi, have put their own unique spin on this whimsical design. Much like the Apple, Acorn, and Tomato shapes, the Cauldron design is characterized by its round bowl and raised rim, reminiscent of the its namesake vessel. This rendition is a softer design, with a stout, supple bowl that features a protruding waistline. The shank is lenticular in profile, flaring out toward the junction, where it meets the simply bent stem of hand-cut black vulcanite. Riyadi dressed the stummel in a smooth, mahogany-hued finish that showcases a vast sea of lovely birdseye underneath the stummel.
