Yeti: Sandblasted Volcano with Mammoth (516)

Product Number: 002-660-0107

Most classic pipe shapes have rather esoteric names. Billiard, Canadian, Lovat — none of those monikers actually explain the design they denote, with Apple being the most obvious exception, of course. More modern, Freehand designs, however, are often a bit more rational in their naming. The Acorn and Blowfish shapes come to mind, but the Volcano is perhaps the most blatant. The profile clearly resembles an ash- and lava-inducing mountain, affirmed further by the chamber itself. This Volcano rendition from Micah "Yeti" Cryder fits the archetype to a T, and if you were to ask a non-pipesmoker what this shape were named, there's a good chance they'd be able to guess correctly.

In regards to this design's conventions, Cryder has separated bowl from heel via a ridgeline that demarcates the gentle taper toward the rim. Sometimes carvers will extend this circular ridgeline in to the bottom of the shank, but Micah has dissipated it below the transition to keep the shank perfectly round and smooth of line. The stout shank and muscular transition inform the bowl's squat posture, while the arcing undercurve and urging aft line of the bowl imbue the profile with dramatic, forward-leaning dynamism, accentuated by the stem's bend. Dressed in a rugged sandblast, the finish further bespeaks Micah's skill — the bowl is dressed in a slight contrast stain for subtle color diversity, while the birdseye-covered heel remains pure and natural. In keeping with his penchant for exotic materials, the American carver topped the shank end with a domed accent of mammoth, the creamy, ink-splotched material maintaining the piece's overall light palette, and when flipped upside down the form's sinuous profile can't help but resemble the ancient mammal's long trunk, making the accent all the more appropriate.
