Yeti: Sandblasted Scoop with Mammoth (505)
Product Number: 002-660-0110
Micah Cryder, the Montana man behind Yeti pipes, doesn't often produce long-shanked pieces, but when he does, they share some design elements in common: The elongated shank will typically flare toward the stem, enhancing its streamlined appeal, while also curling slightly upward; and most often Micah will adorn these pieces with a trim wedding band-style accent at the shank end. In the case of this Scoop, that accent ring was fashioned from mammoth ivory, most of which is sourced from Siberia, where remains of the now-extinct mammals are still buried. Here, the rare material showcases a dark, smoky palette, not dissimilar to that of some horn accents.
The Scoop shape is generally marked by a forward-urging sense of momentum and often some type of "scooped," concave rim. The lines of this piece display a strong degree of dynamism, emphasized by the shank's extended taper toward the transition, and realized fully in the bowl's canted posture. For the rim, Micah has used the briar's natural plateau to dictate the Scoop's concavity — the craggy peaks dipping down in profile. The stummel, then, wears a light depth, glossy sandblast, offering subtle texture in hand while maintaining the bowl's consistent curves in silhouette. Echoing said curves, Micah shaped the stem base to a rounded dome, continuing the implied lines of the shank and cohering well to the stummel's rotund motif.-Truett Smith
