Yeti: Smooth Dublin with Bakelite (546)
Product Number: 002-660-0113
This piece from Micah "Yeti" Cryder touches on a number of the American artisan's aesthetic preferences: For one, the Dublin shape is an oft-seen design in the carver's portfolio, and he's particularly fond of compact renditions, such as this, conveniently lightweight and easily pocketed example. The Dublin is also a reliable shape for well-oriented flame and straight grain, which Micah has highlighted to great effect in a deep, dark walnut contrast stain, and the streaks of grain rise upward into a rim of natural plateau — another of Cryder's proclivities, especially with Dublins. He's approached the plateau more conservatively than other pieces we've seen from him, though, positioning the craggy texture only along the outer rim as it dissipates into smooth briar toward the chamber for an integrated and tastefully reserved disposition.
Lastly, but certain not least, is Micah's signature use of bakelite for the mouthpiece, beautifully displayed in this piece and adding stunning, swirling patterns of smoke grey, creamy milk, and mocha brown. Though an old material, bakelite has gained popularity in modern artisan pipe making, with Cryder being quite influential. The bakelite here adds curving, flowing visual texture against the sleek lines of the stummel's shape and grain for quite a unique aesthetic not to be exactly emulated by any other stem material.-Truett Smith
