Yeti: Smooth Saxophone with Bakelite (613)

Product Number: 002-660-0134

A Freehand shape that's been fashioned in a number of distinct styles, by Italian and Danish and American artisans alike, the Saxophone can take a variety of forms, but it's most characterized by a deeply bent, curling posture and a flaring Dublin bowl. Generally speaking, when fashioned by an Italian maker, the Saxophone shape often hews quite closely to its musical namesake in resemblance; whereas, Danish carvers hint at the design's inspiration more subtly and with a more minimalist style — Tom Eltang's renditions coming especially to mind. In this piece, Micah "Yeti" Cryder tastefully tows the line between those two design traditions, presenting a more gestural profile, à la Italian versions, but one that still maintains the tasteful reservation of Danish iterations.

Prior to this smooth example, Cryder has only fashioned one other Saxophone, a sandblast that debuted at 2019's West Coast Pipe Show, and this rendition maintains that characteristically steep and sweeping sense of curvature but with a stem stretched even more and a slightly more angular profile. While Yeti's blasted Saxophone curled consistently and smoothly through the transition, this version is slightly more tight-knit and angled, lending prominence to the heel and adding dynamism to the form. Though subtle, that shaping difference creates a more crisp-lined and sleek profile in this piece, suiting the smooth finish. Said finish is one of the most dramatic contrast stains I've ever witnessed on a pipe — the difference between the light and dark hues of the palette standing in stunningly stark contrast. The pictures are gorgeous and yet still don't do this pipe justice, the various changes in color able to be appreciated only in person. It's finally topped off by a stem of antique Bakelite whose lemon-and-cream hues perfectly match the golden tones of the stummel.
