Yeti: Sandblasted Dublin with Bakelite (666) Tobacco Pipe

Known for crisp, grain-elevating sandblasts and rich, contemporary color palettes, Yeti's Micah Cryder doesn't disappoint with this handsomely rendered straight Dublin — his 666th pipe ever made. The American artisan's portfolio includes a number of Dublin designs, many of which are muscular and compact, making this nearly six-inch-long pipe a bit of a departure.

Shape-wise, this Dublin displays classic shaping: The bowl cants slightly forward, flaring gradually from a firm heel to a rather broad rim that, in this rendition, is steeped in craggy plateau. It's paired to an oval shank that tapers subtly toward the eye-catching, Kelly green saddle stem of Bakelite, something of a trademark for the Montana native. The resin-based material is easily pliable, though time consuming to work with, and its value continues to rise, as its bright colors and stunning sheen are used in jewelry and, of all things, space shuttles. Micah uses it to great effect in his work, creating compelling color palettes as he has deftly accomplished with this design.

The stummel is wearing one of Micah's well-executed, contrast-stained sandblasts, clearly demonstrating his keen eye for shaping the briar in such a way that best shows off its grain. The mahogany-hued, rich finish reveals tightly stacked, rippling ring grain along with tendrils of flames, the darker sandblast contrasting the bright hues of the mouthpiece. This is another expertly fashioned and precisely engineered piece from the young carver.
