Adam Davidson: Partially Sandblasted Billiard with Bamboo
Product Number: 002-437-0126
Marked by a robust shank extension of two knuckles of bamboo, this Lovat-like Billiard from Adam Davidson is a hearty number in a fairly compact size. The bamboo is from a stock that Adam gathered himself in South Carolina years ago, this particular ferrule being defined by a smattering of inky speckles to contrast against the golden hue. Typically when Davidson incorporates bamboo, he features longer stretches of the organic medium, presenting three or more knuckles. Here, though, two knuckles are sufficient for the form, the stoutness of the bamboo and overall shape emphasized by the ferrule's oval cross section — like that of a Canadian. This helps the piece to sit sturdily upright as well as orient the bamboo's nodes on both flanks.
The Billiard bowl is a classically Danish rendition of the form. It tapers slightly toward the rim from above a firmly rounded heel, with the rim up top being both slightly rounded and then chamfered further inward. Stained a dark, ruby red, the polished rim does well to accent the dark, neatly textured sandblast below, the dimples and ring grain matching with the bamboo's spotted visual texture. Adam expertly blends organic cues in with a traditional form in this piece, resulting in a pipe that's easily loved by those drawn to Danish pipe chart standards while still boasting its own unique personality.-Truett Smith
