Adam Davidson: Sandblasted Figu
Product Number: 002-437-0127
Adam Davidson's Figu shape made its debut at the 2018 West Coast Pipe Show in Las Vegas and further demonstrates the American artisan's creativity and ability to fashion a pipe that's simultaneously uniquely original and readily familiar. In both name and form, the Figu combines elements of Davidson's signature Fig and Hiroyuki Tokutomi's Fugu. A firm ridgeline emanates from the shank face and travels along the underside, curling over the rim's fore and continuing along its aft, eventually bulging slightly outward along the bowl's lower left side to establish the Fugu's "fin." The right flank is proportionally equal to the left but features the Fig's defining spur, perfectly mirroring the fin along the opposite side.
While this Figu is certainly a fascinating shape in many regards, my favorite aspect is the yin and yang aesthetic it gives off. When viewed in profile from either side, the viewer will either see a Fig shape or a Fugu, but it can't be fully appreciated until examined from the smoker's perspective where all of the separate elements merge to form an impeccable hybrid design. Further accentuating the two distinct forms that comprise the entire composition, Davidson has finished the right side in a dark, plum stain while the left flank wears a lighter, earthy brown hue. Though visually contrasting elements, the two separate stains are as complementary and interconnected as the two shapes that influenced the Figu's conceptualization.- Jeffery Sitts
