Adam Davidson: Sandblasted Figu
Product Number: 002-437-0129
Adam Davidson introduced this shape in 2018 at the West Coast Pipe Show in Las Vegas. A hybrid between his signature Fig and Hiroyuki Tokutomi's Fugu, the Figu is half of each shape both in name and form. Informing the piece's foundation, a ridgeline runs through the middle of the underside and up the bowl's fore, curling over the right side of the rim and down to the transition where it flick outward to create the Fugu's defining "fin." Contrasting the dynamic hard line of the right flank, the left features a more plump, rounded disposition, the lower bowl marked by the Fig's characteristic spur, mirroring the fin on the opposition side.
In profile, this Davidson design resembles only one shape, either a Fig or Fugu, looking like two distinctly different pieces depending on the side one from which one views it. When observed from the smoker's perspective, however, the complete composition is enjoyed in full — the distinct, signature elements of its combined shapes creating the perfect hybrid. This particular rendition from Adam is quite streamlined, the shank tapering into the transition and the overall form being pinched along the flanks. For hint of visual disparity, the right side is stained a subtle, chocolate brown to contrast the rest of the piece dark, plum hue, echoing and accentuating the separate shaping of each side.-Truett Smith
