Adam Davidson: Sandblasted Erotique with Bamboo and Mammoth Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-437-0143
This Erotique shape from Adam Davidson draws inspiration from a Hiroyuki Tokutomi iteration of an iconic Jørn Micke shape. Marked by a rotund, creased bowl, Micke's muse was obviously anatomical, and the Danish carver's popularity in Japan led to Tokutomi putting his own creative spin on the avant-garde shape. Adam has a deep fondness for Japanese pipe design and has even traveled to Japan and worked alongside Toku.
Earlier in 2020, Davidson fashioned a rendition of Micke's design, but in this piece he leans more toward Tokutomi's reinterpretations. The bowl's deeper, more defined crease is in line with Toku's take on the design; however, this example doesn't include the oft-seen inclusion of asymmetry from the Japanese carver, maintaining Micke's usual rendering of the bowl. What is especially indicative of Tokutomi's styling is the use of bamboo and mammoth: It presents a more stout disposition compared to Micke's sleek, elongated form, and when Toku used bamboo he often paired it with an accent of mastodon or mammoth. Davidson has paid homage to that convention, even going so far as to use Japanese bamboo tastefully accented by a ring of mammoth ivory at the end. It's a provocative and striking design from Adam, doing well to celebrate two carvers who have inspired him over the course of his career as an artisan pipe maker.-Truett Smith
