Adam Davidson: Sandblasted Elephant's Foot with Bamboo Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-437-0168

The Elephant's Foot was originally designed by legendary artisan Bo Nordh, but over the years, various carvers have crafted their own renditions of the distinctive shape, so much so, that it has become something of a staple within the world of artisan pipe making. Here, Adam Davidson renders the distinctive shape in his personal style, while remaining true to the traditional form and its origins. The shape received its name for its bowl, which Davidson has crafted here with a precise eye for detail. The bowl features a dcurved fore wall that sweeps into a pronounced heel. Panels and ridgelines cover the bowl's flanks, adding a touch of architecture to the supple form and further emphasizing the aforementioned fore wall.

The bowl is set to a lithe shank that's extended by four knuckles of gorgeous bamboo. The bamboo transitions in color, with each knuckle marking a subtle lightening of the dense grass' complexion. Nearer the bowl, the bamboo appears darker, complementing the hues of the stummel's finish, but as it reaches toward the pearly white accent at the junction, the organic material becomes warmer. The stummel is dressed in a dark sandblast that beautifully highlights a sea of birdseye across the bowl's fore and tight striations of cross grain along the flanks. Additionally, the sandblast offers a wealth of texture for the fingers to explore, its rugged appearance handsomely complemented by the weathered bamboo.
