J. Alan: Smooth Calabash with Boxwood Tobacco Pipe

The traditional Calabash, complete with cooling chamber, here meets the more organic end of modern, Danish-style freehand design. The results are complex, with gorgeously grained briar, a rich, extra-dark black-and-walnut finish, warm, tawny boxwood, sleek black vulcanite, and then more smooth briar, this time left in a light natural finish, all contributing to the composition. As is expected from Jeff Gracik, close attention has been payed to all the details of fit and finish, from the smooth-sanded interior of the cooling chamber, to the slim brass ring that accents and reinforces the shank at the mortise.
