J. Alan: Sandblasted Rhodesian (967)

Product Number: 002-376-0162

When I first had the pleasure of describing J. Alan pipes back in early 2007, believe it or not, fully four out of the first ten were Rhodesians. The reason for my "believe it or not" is because, after that initial batch, this is only the second Rhodesian we have seen since. As for the reason behind Gracik's election to veer away from the shape, you'll have to ask the man himself, I can certainly tell you that it isn't due to lack ability with the form; his 2007's were excellent, and you can see what this 2014 looks like.

So, what has changed in a Gracik Rhodesian over the past seven years or so? For starters, his earlier interpretations followed more closely to what we have come to refer to as "The American school", that is the Danish neoclassical forms, as interpreted through a new world lens. There was a greater vertical emphasis in the bowls, as well as some definite effort put in to spotlight the interaction of the shank with the rearward concavity of the bowl — in short, the Jeff Gracik Rhodesian, version 2007, was what many newer carvers are presently aspiring to create in 2014. When it comes to carving, Jeff isn't just "the man", he has been the man (and leader) for many years now.
