J. Alan: Smooth Speeding Egg with Bamboo (1062) Tobacco Pipe

As its name suggests, the silhouette of this Speeding Egg from Jeff Gracik was designed to imply a sense of forward momentum. The dramatic forward cant to the bowl, the acute lip of the rim to the fore, the smooth upward-arcing line from transition to the last knuckle of bamboo. all these elements combine to create a visually striking profile — one that does indeed seem to be "speeding" forward. The perfectly-oriented cross-cut grain pattern complements this dynamism of line and form, with broad columns of crossgrain flowing down either flank — leaving large whorls of birdseye to explode along the fore and aft of the bowl. It's one of the most seamless and lithesome shapes we've received from Jeff, exemplifying yet again the quality craftsmanship and art behind every J. Alan briar.
