J. Alan: Partially Sandblasted Fugu (1521)
Product Number: 002-376-0256
Jeff Gracik's Fugu is an elegant rendition of the shape, which has much of its basis in the Blowfish's style of using panels and shaping to show off the best of the briar's grain. Jeff has done that with aplomb in this piece, drawing the eye from the curl of its shank, through the long panel of the underside, even as it traverses the bowl to highlight a delight of cross-grian along the fore and aft. At the flanks, two crisp panels are steeped in tight whorls of birdseye, the left flank given an additional highlight in the form of a crisp, dark sandblast. It's a detail that adds not only texture and contrast, but an extra-vivid way of displaying the grain, which is highlighted in relief through the process. It's beautiful work, and certainly a piece that shows off not only Jeff's skill, but his eye for detail.
