J. Alan: Partially Sandblasted Fugu with Bamboo (1522) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-376-0283
Organic shapes with dual finishes are demanding and difficult to create because of the precision they require. On this Fugu rendition, Jeff Gracik demonstrates his sophisticated craftsmanship with deft assurance and has created a stunning interpretation. The Fugu, or Blowfish, lends itself well to a wide range of variations and is typically characterized by paneled flanks, separated by a band of cross grain. However, a certain degree of creative license allows pipe makers to alter these elements according to grain or, simply, artistic whimsy. Gracik certainly shaped this one with the briar's grain in mind but added several other elements that make it so unique.
What immediately stood out to me was the dual finish, with the left flank finished in a dark sandblast, while the right side is smooth-polished and dressed in a walnut contrast stain to showcases the hypnotic birdseye that graces its surface. A ridgeline descends from the smooth rim and wraps around the bowl's underside, helping to further distinguish the two finishes. The shank is then extended by three knuckles of black bamboo, its darkened hue harmonizing beautifully with the rest of the composition's dark color palette. The saddle stem continues the organic medium's upward curve before ending in a gentle downturn, offering balance and working in tandem with the piece's light weight to provide a comfortable, hands-free smoking posture.
