J. Alan: Partially Sandblasted Talon (1520)
Product Number: 002-376-0285
The rearward-flicking, uniquely-defined curve of this shape's shank is a cue we've seen on a few different forms from Jeff Gracik, though the carver has managed to make use of this detail to achieve something of a different sense of character with each piece. For his Scorpion Blowfish, the effect was one of the implication of razor-sharp sleekness, practically seeming to slice the air in profile. For his bent Ball shape, the desired result seemed to be something of a juxtaposition, setting the bold, smooth-stained bowl apart from a dark-stained, sandblasted region out back.
For this fellow, the Talon, the intended impression seems to be one of overt power and implied energy, seeming as if it will trigger itself at any moment and pounce on the unassuming smoker. Jeff's managed to emphasize the roundness at the shank-face, serving to call attention to where the talon's point would be, and from which sprouts a gently downturned saddle stem here. Dressed in a warm, stellar contrast and a dark ruby sandblasted texture, the trappings not only serve to draw focus to the bowl up front, but turned upside down, the piece calls to mind the look of unsuspecting prey trapped in the bird's claw.- Daniel Bumgardner
