J. Alan: Smooth Lovat with Ivorite (1529)
Product Number: 002-376-0286
Jeff Gracik of J. Alan pipes has a signature shape that he dubs the "Liminal Billiard." It's a classic take on the straight, saddle-stemmed Billiard and tows the line between the soft-lined, curvaceous Danish style and the more firm, stolid aesthetic often seen throughout modern American pipes — the bowl being slightly tapered and inflated of rim, with cheeking about the transition (all design cues indicative of Danish shaping), but the shank and heel lent some added heft and muscularity (a theme often utilized by American carvers).
Here, Gracik employs those same design elements but rendered in the form of a Lovat, elongating the shank of his Liminal Billiard. The added length streamlines the profile, belying the inherent, aforementioned stoutness about the shank, while keeping the silhouette arrow straight and austere. A lesson in perfect line work, this piece is beautifully minimalist, allowing the shape's pure form to shine in its simplicity. Jeff's craftsmanship is anything but simple, though — the American carver deftly rendering exacting proportions and shaping this piece according to the grain with expert ability: A band of cross grain divides each flank into seas of dense birdseye, brought out by a smoky, walnut-hued contrast stain and accented by trim ivorite between the shank and saddle stem. It's a quintessential classic that exemplifies Gracik's Danish and American influences.-Truett Smith
