J. Alan: Sandblasted Tomato with Bamboo (1556)
Product Number: 002-376-0291
The long lift of the underside preserves the Tomato shape of this bamboo-shanked piece from J. Alan pipes. That squat, rounded plumpness is essential to the Tomato shape, and here it's especially diverting thanks to the darkly stained, two-knuckled bamboo shank, which is diminutive in diameter, long and slender as it reaches to the offset saddle mouthpiece. That slender attitude places more visual emphasis on the bowl itself, which is deserving. The grain is in cross-grain orientation, with patches of blasted birdseye fore and aft, and vertical growth rings left and right. The rim is smooth and concave for easy filling, and it's a narrow band of rim in the reddish hue of the undercoat beneath the black outer stain. With a forward urging presence and elegant lines throughout, this Tomato has the added convenience of being able to sit sturdily on a desktop.- Chuck Stanion
