J. Alan: Sandblasted Billiard (1557)
Product Number: 002-376-0293
Jeff Gracik is one of America's premier pipemakers, drawing influence from Danish shaping cues and fusing them with his own creative style. Such a mélange is exemplified in his Billiard renditions — the bowl often tapered like that of Danish-style Billiards, but the shank and heel decidedly firmer. The juxtaposition results in the Industrial-like proportions seen throughout American pipemaking, and in this piece, Gracik has accentuated that aesthetic further.
The shank and transition are considerably stouter than even his other renditions, the muscularity continuing into the lower bowl and heel. The slight taper of the bowl and ever-so-subtly inflated rim soften the form somewhat, but the use of a sleek saddle stem thrusts the visual weight to the stummel, contributing even more to its inherent robustness. Despite the proportions, Jeff fashioned this piece to be impressively compact, and its lightweight belies the shape's muscularity. All dressed in an immaculate sandblast, the briar reveals every intricate detail of its grain, keeping the eyes and hands delighted every time it's reached for.-Truett Smith
