J. Alan: Sandblasted Tomato (1578)
Product Number: 002-376-0296
A canted, forward-urging Tomato from Jeff Gracik of J. Alan pipes, this sandblasted, diminutive piece features some distinct sandblasted briar. The grain is very wide, with fine strands of opposite grain running perpendicularly, and that feature truly advances this pipe's unusual character. The rim is smooth, thin, and concave, the transition broad and low, and Jeff follows it up with his usual saddle mouthpiece. Jeff rarely cuts tapered mouthpieces, feeling himself, and learning from his customers, that saddle bits are preferential.
Round and squat, the organic bowl is contrasted by the arrow-straight nature of the shank and stem combination leading away. This is a Tomato that will sit sturdily on a flat surface, so practicality is built in, along with the comfort commensurate with its light weight, and the easy portability afforded by this remarkable pipe's small size and weight.- Chuck Stanion
