J. Alan: Sandblasted Strawberry (1585)
Product Number: 002-376-0300
The Strawberry is one of those artisan pipe shapes that enjoys a considerable degree of diversity across different carver's portfolios. In general, it's a highly organic and rounded design, with some maker's lending it a more Acorn-like profile and heel spur. Within Jeff Gracik's body of work, his Strawberry designs most often embody a strong sense of visual momentum and dynamism, with this example resembling a deeply canted Egg. Overall, this is a conveniently compact piece, lightweight and easily handled. As a composition, every line points forward, and every curve is balanced and intentional, making for aesthetically pleasing, gestural design that can't help but be admired. The shank and stem show a every-so-slight S-curve, both bends equal and perfectly balanced, effectively urging the lines forward toward the bowl. The angle of the rim lends the fore a slight point in silhouette, and the taper through the shank toward the transition affords the bowl more visual dominance. At the other end, the shank flares into a subtly domed face, complemented by the stem's expansion ring. I appreciate Jeff's choice of finish here — a reserved, ruby stain and crisp sandblast — ensuring that the briar's grain is appreciated but that the focus remains on the beautiful shape itself.- Truett Smith
