J. Alan: Sandblasted Acorn (1589)
Product Number: 002-376-0301
When interpreted through Jeff Gracik's creative lens, the Acorn shape can present itself in a myriad of forms. From long-shanked variants, to gestural renditions, and ones that seamlessly merge the American and Danish approaches, the possibilities are truly limitless. This particular example continues Gracik's stylistic diversity and is the most rugged rendition we've received from the American carver in terms of both its aesthetics and texture. The muscular bowl sits perched on the end of the curling shank and is noticeably longer than it is wide, its powerful visual presence emphasized further due to the negative space the transition utilizes. The Acorn is an inherently organic form and Jeff has further accentuated its organcisim by positioning plateau along the flaring shank face and the rim, incorporating it in such a way that it blends in flawlessly with the craggy texture of the sandblasted finish. And the sandblast is absolutely spectacular, unveiling a magnificent array of ring grain that starts at the bowl's lifted heel and climbs the bowl before mixing with the plateau. Though this piece is free of any unnecessary adornments, Gracik has chamfered the innermost portion of the rim and stained it a rich ruby hue, echoing the stain along the mortise that's only visible when the stem is removed. Although they are subtle touches, they exemplify the skill and dedication artisan pipemaking requires. This J. Alan piece is one that readily reflects those characteristics.- Jeffery Sitts
