J. Alan: Sandblasted Paneled Apple with Bamboo (1642) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-376-0315
A symbol of the spiritual and material aspects of existence, and of creation, wisdom, and luxury, the apple is limitlessly imbued with meaning. In Celtic lore, the apple is a fruit from outside the domain of humans. King Arthur recuperated after a great battle by repairing to Avalon, also known as the "Island of Apples." One of the 12 Labors of Hercules was to steal apples from the Garden of Hesperides. Mythology is rife with apples, but for pipe makers, Apples represent beautifully rounded shapes to be explored for their natural proportions and comfortable stance.
This example is by Jeff Gracik of J. Alan pipes, and it's worthy of mythological stature. The bowl presents six panels along its flanks, each with crisp ridgelines despite the deep sandblast and stacked ring grain that bisect those ridgelines. The rim is smooth, softly inflated, and in the ruby hue of the undercoat that enhances the darker stummel with added dimension. The shank is diminutive and connects to a three-knuckle extension of bamboo, which is dark in hue but with the knuckles themselves contrasting that tone in lighter hues for vivid definition.
The stem continues the slight upward flare of the bamboo with an offset base and trim saddle configuration that counterbalances that elevating arc with a reserved downward turn to the crisp lip button. This pipe is long and slender, with a bowl that attracts attention through its architectural panels, deeply sandblasted growth rings, and organic curvaceousness, all combining for a smoking instrument revealing the deeper influences and traditional foundations upon which it was built.- Chuck Stanion
