J. Alan: Sandblasted Tomato with Hammered Silver (1747)
Product Number: 002-376-0342
This broad Tomato from Jeff Gracik of J. Alan pipes is something of an anomaly. Jeff prefers saddle stems and almost all of his compositions reflect that, but here he has opted for a tapered stem because the design here is better suited to that configuration. The organic nature of this piece is especially appropriate for the tapered stem, forgoing the angular step-down of a saddle mouthpiece to emphasize curvature throughout.
Jeff's sandblasting technique is among the best, and the tactile nature of the finish is a delight to the finger pads and a cornucopia of visual interest. The growth rings angle across the rounded surface of the stummel in deep grooves, making it easy and fun to hold despite it's wide breadth, which is more recognized from an aerial perspective than in profile. The rim is smooth, beveled, and stained in a lighter tone than the stummel, offering crisp contrast of hue and texture. The shank is cylindrical and terminates in Jeff's special hammered accenting sterling silver, offering additional texture and bright contrast of its own for a pipe that will be cherished in any pipe collection.- Chuck Stanion
