J. Alan: Smooth Bent Apple with Ivorite (1730)
Product Number: 002-376-0348
When he began making pipes, American artisan Jeff Gracik of J. Alan pipes made pilgrimages to learn from master pipe makers, starting with American greats Todd Johnson and Jody Davis, quickly followed by Danish carver Tonni Nielsen. These days Jeff's style displays a wide variety of influences, but this bent Apple leans into the tradition of Danish pipe design, with a plump bowl, softly undulating rim, lifted heel, and a shank that first curves down before rising and flaring quickly as it reaches for the stem.
The shank is crowned by an accent ring of Ivorite, the pale material flaring in a discrete but pronounced amplification of the shank's profile to create an elegant wrapping ridgeline. The stem base is countersunk into the Ivorite, mirroring both the flare and the wrapping ridgeline of the shank end before reducing quickly to one of Jeff's lithe hand-cut saddle configurations, curling downward as it flows to an exquisite lip button.
Dressed in a smooth finish and stunning contrast stain, vertical grain erupts in glorious array, with uniform striations of flames racing up the sides of the bowl and shank, and tightly packed birdseye covering both the rim and pipe's entire underside. Jeff has followed the grain expertly, shaping both the posture of the bowl and angle of the shank to match the grain orientation perfectly. An exemplary piece from a world-renowned pipe maker, this pipe will make a deserving centerpiece in any collection.- Joel Balyeat
