J. Alan: Sandblasted Tomato with Bamboo (1820) Tobacco Pipe

The broad, squat bowl possesses a subtle forward cant and pinched fore that lends the piece an ebbing momentum in profile. The bowl is perched at the end of trim, pencil-thin shank-and-stem arrangement. The abbreviated shank is extended by three knuckles of bamboo, with each knuckle perfectly spaced between the transition and shoulders of the saddle stem for a sense of visual rhythm out back. The smoky, earth-toned sandblast that dresses the stummel draws out some radiating waves of growth rings across the flanks of the bowl, while the rim is left smooth for a dose of contrast.
