J. Alan: Sandblasted Bent Dublin with Horn (1894) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-376-0372

Among the most respected artisans in the world, and especially the United States, Jeff Gracik has built a reputation on refined shaping and paramount engineering. His pipes draw inspiration from Danish classics, and his personal aesthetic is one that prioritizes minimalism and maximizing a briar block's unique grain without ostentation or distraction. This bent Dublin exemplifies Jeff's work, offering a pipe that's squarely rooting in classic traditions, yet is elevated by subtle details, stunning grain, and expert construction.

If you've followed Jeff's work over the years, you've likely seen his tributes to Jess Chonowitsch's signature bent Brandy design. This bent Dublin is not one such tribute; however, it presents a similar gesture in profile and similar sense of forward dynamism. The stem's bend and the shank's upward curl mimic that of those bent Brandy renditions, and the forward cant of the bowl perfectly furthers that implied momentum. Where this Dublin differs, though, is obviously in its bowl — flaring upward into a profoundly domed rim — yet maintaining the same proportional robustness as those bent Brandies. Moreover, the transition and shank are a touch elongated here comparatively, lending adding grace and languid curvature through the profile in a manner that emphasizes the stummel's undercurve in its sweep from the shank through the front of the bowl.

Fashioned from immaculate briar, the stummel has been left unstained, only oiled and waxed, revealing the briar's natural palette but elevated by Jeff's concise sandblast. Ripples of ring grain climb the bowl before ending suddenly at a smooth rim covered in pinpricks of birdseye. Lastly, a horn fitment along the shank end tapers slightly to continue the lines of the shank before the stem base flares outward subtly, and the horn's variegated hues of brown and cream offer the perfect transition from the tanblasted briar to the hand-cut stem of jet-black vulcanite.
