J. Alan: Sandblasted Volcano with Horn (2111) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-376-0409
Jeff Gracik started making pipes as many do, with a few hobby-grade briar blocks, some preformed stems, and a couple hand tools. He quickly fell in love with the art form, and sought out master pipe makers to improve his craft. He first learned from Todd Johnson, who helped teach him the Danish "shape first, drill second" method, while others like Keith Moore and Jody Davis provided additional guidance. In 2003, Jeff Gracik started J. Alan Pipes and the workshop soon became one of American pipe making's premier names. J. Alan pipes typically exhibit the graceful, soft contours of Danish pipe making while utilizing clean, streamlined finishes, often forgoing accents. However, when J. Alan pipes embrace creative forms, dramatic finishes, and exotic accents, they use them to great effect.
This Volcano by J. Alan strikes a jaunty posture, the bowl's walls driving forward to the rim while the shank bends upward at a complementary angle out back. Furthermore, the bowl is framed by a crisp, elliptical ridge, separating the subtle bulge of the underside from the crisp, tapering walls of the bowl. Said walls are meticulously oriented to highlight the sandblasted grain, which sees undulating growth rings running perpendicular to streaks of flame grain. The wispy grain also climbs up the rounded shank, terminating at an organic horn accent that displays an array of chocolatey hues. The stummel is paired to a high-kicking saddle stem that gently curves to the bit, creating a comfortable smoking posture and completing the subtly sinuous profile.
