Alexander Hasty: Sandblasted Bent Egg
Product Number: 002-876-0009
Alexander Hasty blends the softer, slightly muscular American shaping aesthetic with the supple curves and proportions of Danish design cues to create his own style. This bent Egg interpretation is a good example of his design choices, with a plump, forward-surging bowl, cheeking at the transition, and a steady curve from the fore edge of the rim all the way down the bowl, around the heel, and up the shank. Ridgelines evolve from the flanks of the transition's base, flowing up the shank and then sweeping over the top to meet in the middle.
The aesthetic, then, is one of both muscularity and supple invitation, providing an inviting presence in hand and much beauty for the discerning eye to appreciate. Hasty has covered the stummel in a dark stain and stimulating sandblast, accentuating blasted birdseye on both flanks and striations of tight cross grain on the aforementioned sweeping curvature of the fore and underside. A thin brass ring is inlaid in the shank face, encircling a standard mortise, while a lithe saddle stem of hand-cut vulcanite bends gently downward to offer a comfortable perch between the teeth.- Joel Balyeat
