Alexander Hasty: Sandblasted Bent Brandy with Ivorite Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-876-0015
Alexander Hasty's journey into pipe making began in the summer of 2011 with a simple goal: to make a single tobacco pipe for his own personal use. After this pipe was finished, he was determined to make more and make each one better than the last, teaching himself methods and gathering information from the vast source that is the internet, honing his craft with every pipe he produced. As he carved and shaped and worked with the briar, a passion developed, fostered with each stoke of a file and sweep of the sander until, after graduating college, Hasty decided that he was going to make pipes full time. His shaping style is one that values the Danish design school's subtle detailing, imbuing many of his pieces with a gentle momentum, all while keeping the shaping compact and handy, all of which are quite prevalent in this bent Brandy.
The saddle stem that begins this petite piece is demurely curved from the button to the base, the latter of which expands quite dramatically to meet a ring of Ivorite at the shank end, itself bulbous enough to make its presence known. The shank itself, too, is flared, gradually expanding from the cheeked transition to its end with a slight, fluid upturn that poises the stem for comfortable smoking. At the heel we find a subtle lift that pushes the bowl upward a bit and adds a vertical dynamism which keeps the composition lively and interesting, meeting the low-set waistline at the fore which frames the base of the bowl. Bulbous and comfortable in the hand, the bowl of this bent Brandy fits in the hand wonderfully and its size acts in tandem with the flared shank to keep the visual weight of the piece near the transition, allowing you to appreciate every bit of this pipe's lovely shaping. The rim of this pipe is urged slightly forward by the more severe curve of the bowl's aft side coupled with the fore's more subdued flow, and the effect this creates is one that amplifies the forward momentum of the piece, keeping the shape quite dynamic. Dressed in a low-profile sandblast and stained a deep, inky burgundy, the finish is contrasted by the smooth rim's slightly lighter coloration, as well as the Ivorite accent's pale hue.-John McElheny
