About This Pipe

Alexander Hasty's start in the pipe world was quite pure, noble even, as he began with the simple goal of making a smoking pipe for himself. He was educated at first through the resource that is the internet, and lots of practice, later being mentored by other pipe makers, but is now an established artisan in his own right. We've seen a fair few Billiards from Hasty in the past, the shape being one of his most frequently crafted, and one that he carves in a distinctly American style, though tinged with a good bit of Danish influence that lends many compositions, this one included, some alluring softness of line.

Thickly built and rather compact, at just a touch over five inches long, this Billiard boasts ample substance to appreciate in hand, with hearty features through its stummel. The shank is thick and pushes out from a wide transition, taking on a subtle taper toward the stem, where the pair meet at a junction rounded by a domed ring of Ivorite. The pale, alabaster tones of this accent nicely contrast both the stem's vibrant hues and the light stain covering the briar, creating a well of visual intrigue that serves to balance the look of the composition well. Said stem is made from hand-poured resin in striking, variegated greens that swirl through the bit and striate the base, cultivating a palette that's stylish and modern. Up front, the bowl stands on a rounded heel and grows thick, supple walls with a low-set waist and an understated forward cant. The low waist affords the walls the opportunity to make a subtle, arcing taper to the rim for added curvature in hand, its outline seamlessly merging the American style's thickness with the Brandy-like build of more Danish billiards. Dressing the stummel here is a crisp tanblast, with the rim finished smooth, revealing twin fields of textural birdseye on either flank of the bowl.
