Ardor: Urano Cobra
Product Number: 002-004-2986
Originally a shape made by legendary Swedish artisan Bo Nordh, the Cobra is a challenging shape to realize, characterized by a pair of, or singular, firm, sweeping ridgelines that run from the shank end to the rim, a lifted heel, and bulging fore end of the bowl that presents as the shape of a hooded cobra in strike position. This example from Ardor is a dense one, with the visual weight of the bowl magnified by the squatness of the profile and the trimness of the shank, though still, it retains the sinuousness that makes the shape so magical. Dressed in a craggy rustication and stained a deep ruby, this piece it replete with tactile intrigue, and the smooth rim contrasts nicely with the rest of the stummel, its forward dip a subtle and handsome detail. The wooden band at the end of the shank provides a nice splash of color, while the tapered acrylic stem lends the aft end of the pipe an implied line from its bit to the shank end that creates the illusion of continuous flow.-John McElheny
