Ashton: Claret Apple with Bamboo (XX)
Product Number: 002-006-2577
Ashton's Claret finish features a vibrant, scarlet stain that calls to mind the older Redbark line from Dunhill — a similarity that can, no doubt, be traced to Bill Ashton-Taylor's involvement with Dunhill until the early 1980s, when he left to found Ashton. It's among the English marque's most colorful presentations, rivaled only by the iconic stems of the Brindle line, and is continued by Jimmy Craig, who now fashions Ashton pipes, adhering to that same, classically English shaping and finishing style. Here, the craggy, old-school blast is perfectly paired to a squat, Pot-like Apple of around Group 2 size. Two pale knuckles of bamboo extend the shank and contrast starkly against the stummel's ruby stain.-Truett Smith
