Ashton: Sovereign Acorn with Silver (XX) (SG)
Product Number: 002-006-2580
The Acorn isn't a shape most readily associated with the English school, and yet this rendition from Ashton is one of my favorites from the English workshop. The broad, flattened oval shank transitions seamlessly into the high-waisted, soft-heeled bowl, which also displays a good bit of implied forward momentum in profile. It gives the organic shape a dynamic silhouette and demonstrates Ashton's versatility when it comes to shaping and proportions. This offering noticeably trades robustness and muscularity for supple curves and sleek line work, with the slightly elongated transitions offering plenty of room to rest the thumb against. The light, natural stain of the Sovereign finish does a magnificent job of showcasing the briar's beautiful grain patterns as tight, vertical streaks of grain can be seen cascading down the bowl's flanks. It's all topped off with a gorgeous band of sterling silver, further ensuring this piece will stand out in any collection it graces.- Jeffery Sitts
