Ashton: Pebble Grain Bent Dublin (XXX)
Product Number: 002-006-2584
One of the more reserved, understated bent Dublins I've seen Ashton produce, this example pairs a stout, resolute bowl to a gracefully arcing shank and stem arrangement. Said bowl houses a respectably deep chamber within and conforms naturally to the hand thanks to the low-set transition. However, my favorite aspect of this piece is all the wild, fascinating grain that was brought out by the Pebble Grain sandblast. It immediately calls to mind some of the old-school sandblasts worn by Patent-Era Dunhills, which is fitting since that's where Ashton founder Bill Taylor got his start in the 1960s before starting his own brand in 1983. Jimmy Craig now continues the Ashton workshop, but stays devoted to old-school design and finishing cues, as evidenced in this piece: Rugged, rippling waves of ring grain cascade down the bowl's flanks, offering a plethora of engaging texture for your fingers to wander over.- Jeffery Sitts
