Ashton: Brindle Calabash (XXX)
Product Number: 002-006-2685
The Calabash design has seen something of a resurgence in recent years, with makers and workshops all across the globe translating the traditional shape into the current era, using modern materials like briar and vulcanite. Jimmy Craig has his own interpretation of the canonical design, as well; it takes on a more Dublin-like silhouette in profile, with a long, drawn out taper from rim to heel, flowing effortlessly through its sweeping transition and full bend — lending it an almost whimsical, saxophone-like profile. Of course, Jimmy being the steward of old school English blasts, he's finished this particular example in a crisp, highly detailed sandblast, revealing acres of rippling ring grain against a warm, dark finish — topped with a unique mouthpiece of mustard-and-rust-colored brindled vulcanite.- Andrew Wike
