Ashton: Pebble Grain Calabash (XXX)
Product Number: 002-006-3009
The Calabash shape originated with the combination of a gourd, a long, swooping stem, and typically a meerschaum cap, creating a highly functional but quite large apparatus. Briar renditions of the shape allow collectors who like the sweeping profile to make use of it in more versatile proportions, and Jimmy Craig has doubled down on that design choice with this Ashton pipe. Well known for larger renditions, the English carver has crafted this piece into a Nosewarmer length of under 5 inches while maintaining both the sinuous S-curve profile and a bowl height greater than two inches for plenty of chamber capacity. It's wearing the marque's dark Pebble Grain finish, accentuating cross grain that is intriguing to both the eye and fingertips and projecting a serious, mysterious aesthetic. A nearly full-bent saddle stem of black vulcanite tops everything off, bringing to mind an Oom Paul shape in the way it tightens the pipe to its compact dimensions and vertical disposition, promising an excellent jaw-hanger.- Joel Balyeat
