Ashton: Pebble Grain Bent Billiard with Silver (XXX) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-006-3985
William "Bill" Ashton Taylor began working for Dunhill in 1959 at 15 years old, manning one of the legendary English marque's lathes after a lengthy apprenticeship. During his time at the White Spot, Bill absorbed all the secrets of the craft he could from their experienced carvers, coming into his own as a carver and marking the start of a lengthy career. After feeling the need to start his own company, Bill founded Ashton pipes in 1983, going into business for himself and holding his work to extremely strict standards of quality that have earned the Ashton name an excellent reputation. William passed away in 2009, entrusting Ashton's production to Jimmy Craig, his protege, who has maintained the stringent standards of his predecessor, creating pieces with timeless appeal and classic charm. Though it may not be as sinuously curved as Dunhill's "LC" shape, this bent Billiard is still quite deeply curved, with a high-reaching stem that ebbs out of a sharply upturned shank. Said shank ebbs forth from a tight transition that's wide enough to drape a digit, but still poises the shank and stem for comfortable smoking and easy jaw-hanging. The heel is nicely rounded and sweeps into a tall bowl that's canted forward for a dynamic, active look, while its rounded walls offer a comfortable feel in hand. As part of the Brindle series, it's dressed in a dark sandblast that unveils some handsome grain, and it's paired to a vibrant stem of brindled green hues: adding rich contrast in concert with the silver band at the junction.
