About This Pipe

William "Bill" Ashton-Taylor spent his working life around pipes, starting as a lathe operator with Dunhill at the age of 15 in 1959. He later struck out on his own with the Ashton brand, spinning its first pipe in 1983. Bill took immense pride in the process of making Ashton pipes. He traveled to Italy twice a year to buy wood, steeped his turned bowls in a blend of oils before heating them to draw out unwanted sap, and even garnered a British patent for his unique manufacturing process that produced lighter pipes. Bill died in 2009, but his process lives on through Ashton disciple Jimmy Craig.

This Canadian, from Ashton's Brindle series, features a dark, heavily sandblasted finish that allows the smoker to easily follow the ring grain circling the bowl, especially in the hand. The geometry of the bowl is as classic as a sandblasted Billiard variant can get, perfectly straight while still allowing the fine shadows of the sandblasting to be seen in silhouette. The underside of the stummel lacks sandblasting to allow the pipe to sit on a flat surface without any assistance. A thick silver accent finishes the stummel, meeting a vulcanite stem in handsome black and orange.
