Askwith: Partially Rusticated Rhodesian
Product Number: 002-499-0243
While Chris Askwith makes a number of Rhodesians, I have seen very few that are bent, and even fewer that are as elegant and supple as this piece. With a forward-canted bowl and soft, wavering curvature behind, it's a piece that brings to mind some more American pieces I've seen, though it has been endowed with Chris's particular style. Indeed, the finish is what stands out in this piece. A light stain to the stummel highlights some fine grain, while the underside has been lined with some particularly craggy rustication, making for a great deal of texture when palmed. It's given a hint of Chris's iconic brightness, as well, through the addition of a sunny yellow stem, which helps to bring some additional warmth to the piece as a whole. Nothing to be unhappy about here, it's a piece that breaks out of Chris's traditional shaping style, and does so with aplomb.
