Askwith: Sandblasted Bent Apple
Product Number: 002-499-0257
For an English carver who tends to closely follow the standard pipe chart, this piece by Chris Askwith tows the line and blends various aspects of several shapes. Plump of base and rounded in hand, the heel hints at Apple, but the steady upward rise and slight taper fall in line with Billiard/Brandy renditions, trimming down the Apple's conventional plumpness through the rim. Out back, the muscular transition and shank adhere to those of an Author, especially in the gracefully subtle bend. It's a wonderful, almost-hybrid piece that still maintains plenty of traditional charm in a rather compact form, boasting a jet-black sandblast and one of Chris's extroverted acrylic stems.-Truett Smith
