Askwith: Smooth Bent Apple with Bamboo

Product Number: 002-499-0263

Rather Prince-like in its execution, this bent Apple from Chris Askwith is quite a trim, elegant take on the classic shape. A squat, petite bulb of a bowl is perched at the end of a lengthy stretch of shank and stem. The ever-so-slight downturn to the mouthpiece gives the shape its subtly graceful profile, especially when paired to the gentle, plump bowl. Like many of the English carver's pipes, the stem is made from polyester, offering a feel somewhere in between vulcanite and acrylic and is an excellent way to display some vibrant colors. Here, Chris has opted for a traditional jet-black color, rather than one of his flashy, eye-catching patterns, further accentuating the classic appeal of this example. Said stem is attached by means of a reverse metal tenon, adding reinforcement and allowing the mouthpiece to be removed at any time. However, what really steals the show here is the bamboo shank extension. While Chris continually uses alternative materials and accents in his work, bamboo is rarely seen in his impressive portfolio as this is only the fourth time we've seen a pipe from him with the organic material. Two knuckles of pale bamboo extend the shank and complement the bowl's light chestnut stain handsomely. An excellent option for those drawn to Askwith's work, but favor a more classically inclined piece.
