Askwith: Rusticated Bent Egg with Morta
Product Number: 002-499-0265
While Chris Askwith is well-known for his colorful stem work and pipes full of flashiness, this bent Egg is certainly one of his wilder designs when it comes to shaping. It's also quite substantial and is easily one of the largest pieces I've seen from the English carver. Askwith has certainly made the most of all that extra canvas, resulting in a pipe with no shortage of textural or visual diversity. The forward-urging, hearty Egg bowl wears an incredibly rugged rustication, accented by a smooth chestnut stained rim up top. Following the curling transition, the shank flares dramatically into a section of smooth morta, full of tight grain and expertly contrasted against the rest of the stummel's craggy texture. Out back, a softly downturned polyester stem of creamy white contrasts the dark color palette established by the rest of the composition. It's an incredibly bold and daring piece from Chris, and should have no issues providing countless hours of visual and textural enjoyment.- Jeffery Sitts
