Askwith: Rusticated Bent Billiard
Product Number: 002-499-0272
While many of the pipes within Chris Askwith's diverse portfolio are inspired by shape chart standards, this offering is surprisingly just the third time we've received a bent Billiard from the English artisan, with the last time being four years ago. And based on this piece, I'd say it was well worth the wait as it displays the signature characteristics of Askwith's work that set him apart from other contemporary carvers. Almost Prince-like in its execution, this example features a stout bowl paired to an elegantly arcing shank and stem combination. Said bowl is around a Group 1 or 2 in terms of size and is covered in a rugged rustication, providing plenty of craggy texture to fiddle with in hand. The vibrant polyester stem's swirling mix of blue and yellow colors continues Askwith's penchant for vivid color palettes and is quite hypnotic as you'll constantly find yourself gazing into its mesmerizing patterns. If you're a fan of classic shapes, but want something with some extra pizzazz, this pipe is an ideal choice.- Jeffery Sitts
