Askwith: Rusticated Billiard
Product Number: 002-499-0284
Rivaling his Devil Anse renditions with its compact length, this Billiard from Chris Askwith is among the smallest designs I've come across from the English carver. Measuring just four inches in overall length, it can effortlessly be slipped into a pocket at a moment's notice yet houses a chamber of considerable depth, making it quite a versatile take on the shape chart standard. The abbreviated shank and tapered mouthpiece combination throws the majority of the piece's visual weight toward the bowl. Said bowl is finished in a rugged, dimpled rustication, providing an abundance of intriguing texture that will certainly keep wandering fingers entertained. The softly inflated rim has been left smooth, finished in a light chestnut hue to contrast against the rest of the bowl's dark stain. Meanwhile, the polyester mouthpiece continues Askwith's penchant for unique color palettes with its mix of yellow and black tones calling to mind images of pollen on a pond's surface during springtime.- Jeffery Sitts
